Nowadays, it’s quite common for one parent to stay at home with the children, while the other spends their days working at an office job. It’s almost become the norm for a lot of two-parent households. And while being a stay at home mom or dad is great, that doesn’t change the fact that there may be some business savvy ideas that are brewing in your head as well. Staying at home doesn’t mean that you can’t work from home. Not at all. Staying at home means that you have the opportunity to care for your family, and provide for your family, all at the same time. Sounds pretty amazing when it’s put that way, right? Is it possible to stay at home and build your business? Absolutely – it’s exactly what I do! As a Virtual Assistant, I am able to stay at home and make over $5,000/month – all while taking care of my family and home!

Simple Steps to Stay at Home and Build Your Business

  1. Work during the downtime. Being a stay at home parent is already busy, but then adding the stresses of building your own business? Get ready to work overtime. And if that is your goal, that’s fine! Just know that it is possible to stay at home and build your own business if you work around the downtimes of everyone else’s schedule. Nap time, late at night after everyone is in bed, and early morning are all great times to zone in on your business plan without having to worry about any outside distractions.
  2. Don’t pressure yourself by putting too much on your plate. You may feel as though you need to get everything done in a short amount of time, and while that’s understandable, it’s also creating a highly stressful situation for yourself and those around you. Before starting to build your business, understand that it takes time…and then allow yourself that time. The more that you can plan, process, and prepare the easier your transition from staying at home to rocking your own business will be.
  3. Create a business plan and stick to it. The key to building your own business, no matter what point of planning you are in, is to create a rock solid business plan and make it happen. While there can be a bit of wiggle room in your business plan creation, you still need to have that overall structure to give you guidance and guidelines to stick to. And don’t worry…if after working on your business plan you decide that something isn’t quite right, you’ve got the time that you can get it corrected before launching!
  4. Remember that it’s a relay, not a race. Pace yourself and do what feels right for you and your family. Building a business isn’t something that can happen in a day, nor is it something that should just be thrown together quickly. Before starting to even build your business, mentally prepare yourself that you are in this for the long haul. There will be peaks and valleys and ups and downs, and super highs and draining lows…and it’s all part of it. If you are strong-willed and strong-minded then you be more likely to handle and process those days that just seem to be never-ending. While the relay may feel like it takes a while to get there, it’s slow and steady that typically ending up winning the overall race, right?

While it may seem stressful at times to think about staying at home and building your business, it is possible to do so with a little bit of prep work on your part. Stay calm, stay focused and stay on course and you’ll soon find out that you can find a positive way to balance your home life and your venture of building your own business as well.
